Currently at AWS, Tomas Romero specialises in cloud computing, data platforms, high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence, and M&A advisory. His career spans major organisations including Wipro, EY, and Deloitte, where he has worked on large-scale transformation programmes across financial services and energy.
In our conversation, Tomas shared his perspectives on navigating data precision, adopting AI-driven insights, and building resilient change management strategies that enable sustainable transformation.
Precision in Data and the Role of AI
With extensive experience designing and implementing data platforms, architecture, and visualisation systems, Tomas emphasises the importance of precision and accuracy, particularly in industries that operate with extremely high transaction volumes.
“When we’re dealing with billions of transactions, even a 0.2 percent error rate can have massive implications for end consumers,” he explains.
For Tomas, the solution lies in building robust data infrastructures supported by AI systems that enhance accuracy across both routine processes and critical decision-making.
“AI is becoming a powerful tool for augmenting insights,” he says, “but it’s only as valuable as the data it processes.”
He stresses the importance of rigorous data validation. In practice, this often involves combining automated systems with manual oversight.
“In a recent project, we had one team working on AI-driven configuration and algorithm development, while another team manually checked calculations and outputs,” Tomas explains.
“This allowed us to benchmark accuracy while the machine learning models were learning patterns through repetition.”
The result was a hybrid model where AI delivered efficiency through learning, while human oversight maintained the integrity of the data.
Change Management in Transformation Programmes
Despite the power of emerging technologies, Tomas believes transformation ultimately depends on people rather than tools.
“The real challenge isn’t simply deploying AI, a new data platform, or a new ERP system,” he says. “It’s preparing the organisation for the shift.”
Effective transformation requires structured change management. Tomas focuses on building internal momentum by:
establishing champions for change
appointing change agents across the business
creating clear communication channels
aligning stakeholders across regions and functions
“Each transformation initiative is unique,” he explains, “but success consistently depends on bringing people along with the change.”
Over the past decade, Tomas has worked on Target Operating Models that integrate cloud services, applications, data platforms, and operational processes across energy and financial services organisations.
“We work closely with teams to ensure they understand not just the how but also the why behind each transformation.”
Integrating AI and Data for Operational Efficiency
In financial services, AI and robotics are rapidly transforming traditionally complex and time-intensive processes.
Areas such as credit risk analysis, trading settlement reconciliation, and financial operations are increasingly automated, improving both speed and precision.
“AI is now capable of handling intricate tasks,” Tomas explains, “from visualising credit risk data in real time to streamlining entire financial settlement processes.”
This shift is not solely about cost reduction.
“It’s about enabling teams to make faster, more informed decisions based on accurate data,” he says.
Over the past fifteen years, Tomas has helped organisations automate customer operations and embed AI within core financial processes such as:
accounts reconciliation
intercompany accounting
customer service workflows
“When we automate and introduce intelligent agents into these processes, professionals can focus on more strategic work,” he explains.
“This improves efficiency while freeing up resources for innovation.”
The Future of Digital Transformation
Looking ahead, Tomas sees enormous potential in the convergence of AI, cloud computing, and advanced data analytics.
“The future of digital transformation lies in integrating emerging technologies that deliver both operational efficiency and customer value,” he says.
By focusing on value engineering and process transformation, Tomas helps organisations become more agile and digitally enabled.
In a rapidly changing environment, the ability to combine technological innovation with operational resilience will define the next generation of successful organisations.
